Malware can come from numerous disguises. With businesses going digital and advancements in technology, all companies require protection; yes, even small and medium-sized businesses need it. Without quality protection, you open your business data to attacks that will disrupt your operations to lose revenue, clients, and integrity.
Such attacks can cause destructive effects. One should be aware of the common types of Malwares. Here's a glimpse of its occurrences:
WHAT IS MALWARE?
Malicious software, commonly called malware, includes any software where, when downloaded, the attacker can have the power to steal confidential information, destroy applications, and even watch your computer activity without you noticing it. Malware can actuate when a user unwarily clicks a link on the web or download a free program from the internet.
WORMS
Just like how a worm spreads throughout an area, this virus replicates itself from computer to computer. It aims to steal personal/business-sensitive information such as passwords and data.
In my elementary days, we discussed the famous worm virus called ILOVEYOU attack or LoveBug, which occurred in May 2000. It is a computer worm that attacked millions of computers. During that time, it is said that users receive emails with a subject line saying "ILOVEYOU" with an attachment of "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs.” Once opened, the user's email contacts will receive the same email; thus, the stealing happens.
Interestingly, Onel De Guzman from Manila, Philippines, created the virus. His reason? His struggling life as a student led him to make a worm to steal internet passwords from other users so that he could use the internet for free. Little did he know that it would spread fast and reach users globally, including big companies.
Since then, countries worldwide have created laws concerning computer attacks. The ILOVEYOUATTACK opened the eyes of many people worldwide due to its economic effect.
SPYWARE
Spyware is software that aims to spy on a user's device activity without them noticing it.
One of the recent Spyware that made its way to android users in 2021 was the malware called PhoneSpy. Targeted South Koreans, the research team of Zimperium zLabs (technology leader in mobile device and security) revealed that the malicious software tricks users by looking like a legit lifestyle phone application.
Their report further stated that they found that the software is not available in the android play stores, which may mean that the attackers distributed the software via social engineering or traffic redirection. When installed, the attackers can access the user's data like contacts and files, control their messaging apps, record audio, and video in real-time, and even detect one's location.
Whether active or not, authorities from South Korea and the United States have already been informed. Users must stay vigilant in downloading any app, as you can infiltrate your data which can be used against you or your organization, especially if your business has a policy about bringing your own device (BYOD).
RANSOMWARE
From the name itself, ransomware is a type of attack that comes with a cost. It is designed to block users from using their system. Hackers in this area would typically say, "do you want access to your files and data back? Pay!"
The WannaCry attack happened in the year 2017. Crypto ransomware attacked 230,000 computers, from personal computers to hospitals and many other industries. The attackers held the files of many users worldwide. Those who could not update their operating systems became victims of the attack.
To ransom what was stolen, the attackers demanded payment in bitcoin, starting from $300 and eventually raising it to $600. Due to this required payment, some users were left with no choice but to pay the ransom. Unfortunately, none of the victims was able to have their files back. The WannaCry attack was said to be stopped by Marcus Hutchins, a 22-year-old who accidentally activated the kill switch, which slowed the episode in its first few hours and destroyed it.
ADWARE
Developers designed Adware or Advertising-supported software. Their motive in creating such malware is to send advertisements to users on their computers and profit from it.
Have you found yourself in a situation continually closing pop-ads in your browser? You may have downloaded a free program from the internet or installed an application that is infected by adware; in either case, this malware can pose disadvantages to your devices, such as freezing and crashing of browser and slow running of the computer.
As I said, the money-making scheme is the ultimate reason for creating this malware. As the attackers can see your browsing history, they can tailor fit and create advertisements based on your interest. Adding to this is they can also sell your data to companies that may need it.
There are numerous ways to avoid malware, while the most basic is to keep your operating systems updated. Another feasible strategy is to subscribe to security software like Microsoft Security. Installing a security program will protect your device from many threats and viruses.
Designed not just for the home but also for businesses, Microsoft Security is a modern solution for modern threats. According to an article by Vasu Jakkal, Corporate Vice President, Security, Compliance, Identity and Management, more than 50% of SMBs (small and medium businesses) don't feel equipped to handle their security, as they see that they lack resources and skills.
Risk can also root in human errors; passwords can be lost or stolen. Without precautions such as multi-factor authentication, you are opening a chance to attackers because your security is at a minimum level. The same goes for opening emails that contain attractive links, be careful to click on them, as you might expose your device to a hacker. Be proactive, even in emails.
